Etymology: < post-classical Latin (also scientific Latin) pterido-, combining form (in e.g. pteridographia : see pteridography n. ) < Hellenistic Greek πτεριδ- , πτερίς fern (see pteris n.); compare -o- connective.Formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
