Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin pterid- , pteris , -eous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pterid-, pteris pteris n. + -eous suffix, after scientific Latin Pterideae, former tribe name (1796 or earlier).R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1858) also gives a Latin form pterideus. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pt-, tĕri·diəs) /(p)təˈrɪdiəs/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Belonging to or designating ferns of the former tribe Pterideae (now included in the family Pteridaceae).

1858 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) 1037/1 Pterideus, applied to a Tribe (Pterideæ, nom. pl.) of the Filices, having the Pteris for their type: pterideous.
