Etymology: < scientific Latin Pteraspis (R. Kner 1847, in Naturwissensch. Abhandl. 1 165) < ancient Greek πτερόν (see ptero- comb. form) + ἀσπιδ- , ἀσπίς shield (see aspidistra n.).

Palaeontology.

A genus of armoured jawless fossil fishes (ostracoderms) of the Lower Devonian with the anterior end enclosed by a shield of bony plates; a fish of this genus.
