Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin psyctica.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin psyctica, plural noun (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684: see note below) < ancient Greek τὰ ψυκτικά (plural noun) refrigerants (in Hippocrates), use as noun of ψυκτικός < ancient Greek ψύχειν to cool (see psykter n.) + -τικός, suffix forming adjectives from verbs.Compare the following earlier occurrence of the post-classical Latin word in an English context:1684 tr. S. Blankaart Physical Dict. 239 Psyctica are cooling Medicines [L. Psyctica, sunt Medicamenta refrigerantia]. The form in -ch- is either after the -χ- in ancient Greek ψύχειν , or by analogy with English words in psych- (compare psycho- comb. form).
Medicine. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
