Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: psychro- comb. form, tolerant adj.
Etymology: < psychro- comb. form + tolerant adj.The term was apparently introduced in order to overcome the ambiguity of psychrophilic adj.; compare quot. 1959.
Biology.
Of an organism, esp. a bacterium: capable of growing at temperatures close to freezing, but having a higher optimal growth temperature. Cf. psychrophilic adj.
