Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: psycho- comb. form, technology n.
Etymology: < psycho- comb. form + technology n., probably partly after German Psychotechnik (1904 in psychology: L. W. Stern, in Beiträge zur Psychologie der Aussage 1 28). Compare slightly earlier psychotechnics n.Quot. 1910 is from an English translation of Stern's unpublished lecture notes.
Originally and chiefly Psychology.
The branch of psychology that deals with the practical application of knowledge about the human mind or brain. In later use also: any technology designed to alter thought or behaviour by manipulation of brain function; the study or development of such technology.
