Etymology: < post-classical Latin procatarxis (1667 in the passage translated in quot. 1681) < Byzantine Greek προκάταρξις first beginning (4th cent. a.d.) < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + Hellenistic Greek κάταρξις beginning ( < ancient Greek κατα- cata- prefix + the stem of ἄρχειν to rule (see archon n.2) + -σις -sis suffix), probably after Hellenistic Greek προκαταρκτικός procatarctic adj. Compare earlier procatarctic adj., procatarctic n.
Medicine. Obsolete.
A procatarctic cause of a disease; = procatarctic n.
