Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prosopographia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prosopographia description of a person's appearance (1577 in the source translated in quot. 1577 at sense 1), description of an individual's life (1610 in a work title; earlier in sense ‘personification’, a1564) < ancient Greek πρόσωπον face, person (see prosopon n.) + post-classical Latin -graphia -graphy comb. form. Compare French prosopographie description of the personal appearance, deportment, etc. of an individual (1573 in a work title; early 20th cent. or earlier in sense 2), German Prosopographie (early 20th cent. or earlier in sense 2).
