ΚΠ
1984 H. P. Schmid et al. in EMBO Jrnl. 3 29 A novel ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particle showing a highly compact and characteristic structure in the electron microscope was found associated with globin and other repressed mRNA in the cytoplasm of duck, mouse and HeLa cells... We propose the name ‘prosome’ for this ScRNP particle which somehow participates in negative control of mRNA translation.
1988 Nature 14 Jan. 331 Because these particles seemed to copurify with inactive mRNA, they were assumed to function in regulating mRNA translation and hence were named ‘prosomes’ (for ‘programmed-o-some’).
2001 Exper. Cell Res. 266 193 Prosomes (20S proteasomes) constitute the catalytic core of the 26S proteasomes, but were first observed as factors associated with untranslated mRNA.
