Etymology: < Middle French accueillir, accoellir (French accueillir ; compare Anglo-Norman acuillir , acoillir ) to gather, assemble (14th cent.; c1100 in sense ‘to push’) < post-classical Latin accolligere (recorded only from the 12th cent., in sense ‘to assume as a joint-proprietor’) < classical Latin ac- ac- prefix + colligere to gather (see collect v.). Compare coil v.1
