Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian principe.
Etymology: < Italian principe title accorded to an Italian nobleman of the highest rank, also a man holding this title (13th cent.), heir presumptive of a monarchy (early 16th cent.; beginning of the 13th cent. in sense ‘ruler, sovereign’) < classical Latin princip- , princeps (see princeps n.). Compare principessa n.Compare the following slightly earlier attestation of the Italian word in an English context:1824 W. Irving Tales of Traveller III. 48 The courier,..who was a Neopolitan, had given a magnificient account of the riches and greatness of his master..so that by the time the alderman drove up to the door, he was Milor—Magnifico—Principe—the Lord knows what! In plural form Principi after the Italian plural form.
