In sense 2 < Hellenistic Greek προκέϕαλος long-headed, as used in prosody (thus in Hephaestion, 2nd cent. a.d.; < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix² + κεϕαλή head: see cephalo- comb. form) + -ic suffix; compare post-classical Latin procephalus that has an extra syllable prefixed (8th cent. in a British source). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the pronunciation (prō^usĭfæ·lik) /prəʊsɪˈfælɪk/.
