Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Procellaria , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Procellaria, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 6, 1748) 32; < classical Latin procella procelle n. + -āria : see -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. With the noun compare French procellaire (1803), procellaria (1819). Compare earlier procellariine adj. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (prǫselēə·riăn) /prɒsɛˈlɛərɪən/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
