Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praevidere.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin praevidere to take care of, provide for (from 8th cent. in British and continental sources), alteration (with prefix substitution: see pre- prefix) of classical Latin prōvidēre provide v. Compare Italian prevedere (a1292). Compare provide v. I. (and the 17th-cent. nonstandard form preuide at that entry), purvey v., and later previde v.2, previse v.1
