Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: prevent v.; Latin praevent- , praevenīre , -ial suffix.
Etymology: Irregularly < either prevent v. or its etymon classical Latin praevent-, past participial stem of praevenīre prevene v. + -ial suffix. Compare slightly earlier preventional adj. Compare also earlier preventive adj.
Precautionary; that prevents something from occurring or being done; = preventional adj. 1.
