Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin probātum ; probatum est phr.
Etymology: Partly < classical Latin probātum a thing proved (see probate n.), and partly shortened < probatum est phr. Compare probatum est n. With use as adjective compare earlier probate adj. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (prəʊ'beɪtəm) /prəʊˈbeɪtəm/.

1. A thing proved; a demonstrated conclusion or fact, esp. a means or remedy that has been tried and found effective; an approved remedy. Cf. probatum est n.
