Etymology: < post-classical Latin privilegiatus privileged person (from c1170 in British sources; 16th cent. in a continental source), use as noun of past participle of privilegiare (see privilege v.). Compare Old Occitan privilegiat (a1463), Catalan privilegiat (1272), Spanish privilegiado (late 13th cent. or earlier), Portuguese privilegiado (13th cent.), Italian privilegiato (c1260), all adjectives. Compare earlier privilegiate v.
