单词 prince rupert
释义

Prince Rupertn.

Brit. /ˌprɪns ˈruːpət/, U.S. /ˈprɪns ˈrupərt/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Prince Rupert.
Etymology: < the name of Prince Rupert, Prince and Count Palatine of the Rhine (German Prinz Ruprecht ; 1619–82), nephew of King Charles I of England, Royalist general, and natural philosopher, who invented the metal that was later named after him (see sense 2, and compare earlier Prince's metal n.).Although contemporary sources state that Prince Rupert brought some specimens of the drops (see sense 1) to England in 1660, there is no evidence that he discovered them. They appear to have been known since the early 17th cent., first in Germany, later also in the Netherlands and France. See further L. Brodsley et al. ‘Prince Rupert's Drops’ in Notes & Records Royal Soc. 41 (1986) 1–26.
1. Prince Rupert's drop n. a teardrop-shaped bubble of glass with a long, sharp tail, made by rapidly cooling a drop of molten glass in water, which is very strong under pressure at the head, but disintegrates explosively when the tail is broken or the surface scratched. Also figurative. Now historical.
