A prince who acts as regent of a country during the minority, incapacity, or absence of the monarch; spec. George Prince of Wales (later George IV), who assumed this role from 1811–20 during the incapacity of George III.The official title of George Prince of Wales in the Act of 1811 (51 Geo. III, c. 1) was ‘Regent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland’, but the word ‘Prince’ was, in non-official language, commonly prefixed to ‘Regent’; he was also empowered by the Act to sign documents George P.R. or G.P.R., instead of his initials G.P. as Prince of Wales.
