Etymology: < classical Latin praevenient-, praeveniēns premature, use as adjective of present participle of praevenīre prevene v. Compare Catalan prevenient (14th cent.), Spanish preveniente (1437 in theology). Compare earlier prevening adj., preventing adj.
1. Theology. Coming before or antecedent to human action. Chiefly in prevenient grace n. the grace of God which precedes repentance and faith, predisposing a person to seek God in advance of any desire or motion on their part. Cf. prevene v. 1c and prevent v. 3.
