English regional (East Anglian). Now historical.
A narrow, elongated spade used for cutting turf, usually having a second cutter or wing set at a right angle to the main blade. Cf. slane n.

Etymology: Etymology unknown. Dutch bogt, bocht ‘bend’ of rope, has been suggested. Falconer Dict. Marine, thought it ‘probably a corruption of bracket.’
Nautical.
A simple contrivance, usually a loop of rope with a knot on one end and eye at the other, but also a large hook, or a wooden bracket, used for confining loose ropes, tackle, ropes, oars, spars, etc. in a convenient place, and also for holding or securing the tacks and sheets of sails, and for similar purposes.

Etymology: Apparently < a (14th-cent.) post-classical Latin or vernacular noun of uncertain form and meaning (perhaps ‘cap, hood’, with reference to academic hoods; with the form begen in the quot., perhaps compare biggin n.1).In the following example from the Merton College accounts, beketes apparently shows an vernacular word (presumably either Middle English or Anglo-Norman) in a Latin context:1355–6 Warden's Acct. (Merton Coll. Oxf. Archives: Rec. No. 3534) Expens': §Camera: Item pro iij. beketes viridis Syndon xxx. s'.
