单词 primprint
释义

primprintn.

Brit. /ˈprɪmprɪnt/, U.S. /ˈprɪmˌprɪnt/
Forms: 1500s primprinte, 1500s prymprynt, 1500s–1700s primeprint, 1500s– primprint. N. E. D. (1908) also records a form pimprint.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare earlier primp n. and later prim n.2 Compare also later †print, in the same sense (1633; English regional (Northamptonshire) in later use).A connection with prim adj. is unlikely on both chronological and semantic grounds. It has been suggested that the word is a compound of prime adj. or its etymons Middle French prime or classical Latin prīmus + a second element shortened < Middle French printemps spring (see prime temps n.). The first part of this argument seems to be based on the fact that primrose n. (the first element of which probably does show Old French prime or classical Latin prīmus ) and primprint both occur in 15th- and 16th-cent. botanical literature as translations of classical Latin ligustrum ligustrum n. (see note at primrose n. on the uncertainty among medieval writers as to the plant denoted by classical Latin ligustrum ). However, there appear to be several reasons for rejecting this etymology: the proposed shortening of Middle French printemps seems very unlikely; no similar compound appears to be recorded either in French or in other Romance languages; and, whatever the confusion about the meaning of classical Latin ligustrum , the present word appears to denote only the privet, while by the 16th cent. primrose n. does not. The apparently related forms pruneprint and prune prime tree are also recorded in the 17th cent., perhaps simply showing errors for this word.
Now historical.
Privet (genus Ligustrum). Cf. prim n.2, primp n.
