Etymology: < post-classical Latin praetaxation-, praetaxatio prior evaluation (4th cent.), previous agreement (late 12th cent. in a British source) < praetaxat- , past participial stem of praetaxare to count, reckon, or estimate beforehand (8th cent.), to determine (c1100), to mention previously (1145, c1225 in British sources; < classical Latin prae- pre- prefix + taxāre tax v.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1; compare taxation n. The intermediate sense was apparently that of giving a preliminary opinion.
