Etymology: Irregularly < pro- prefix¹ (perhaps taken as opposed to a- prefix⁶ (ancient Greek ἀ- ) in amastigote n.) + ancient Greek μαστιγ-, μάστιξ whip (see -mastix comb. form; used to render ‘flagellum’) + -ote suffix (see quot. 1966).
