Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + mammalian adj., after scientific Latin Promammalia, plural ( Haeckel Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte (1868) xviii. 462). Compare slightly later promammal n.
Palaeontology and Zoology. Now chiefly historical.
Relating to or designating a group of (actual or hypothetical) animals representing the ancestors of mammals, or the most primitive form of mammal.
