单词 pritchel
释义

pritcheln.

Brit. /ˈprɪtʃl/, U.S. /ˈprɪtʃ(ə)l/
Forms: late Middle English prychel, 1500s prichell, 1600s (Scottish) 1800s– pritchell, 1800s– pritchel, 1800s– pritchil (English regional (south-western)), 1800s– purchil (English regional (Somerset)).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pritch n., -el suffix1, prickle n.1
Etymology: Either < pritch n. + -el suffix1, or the reflex of an Old English variant (with palatalized consonant) of prickle n.1The c in Old English pricel prickle n.1 can represent either a stop or an affricate, and hence some of the examples cited at that entry may, in fact, be earlier instances of this word. Earlier currency may also be implied by the place name Prichel (1332), but this is uncertain (see A. Mawer et al. Place-names of Worcestershire (1927) 64).
1. Any of various sharp-pointed instruments or tools for prodding, cutting, making holes, etc. Now chiefly English regional.
