Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian pristav′′.
Etymology: < Old Russian pristav′′ (Russian pristav) inspector, commissioner, prefect, lit. ‘person who has been appointed or commissioned’ < pri- before, to + stav-, stem of stavit′ to set up, place, post. N.E.D. (1908) enters this under pristaf.

In Imperial Russia: (originally) an official appointed to receive and take care of foreign ambassadors; (later) a commissioner, police commander, or overseer.
