Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French primine.

Etymology: In sense 1 < French primine (1829 or earlier in C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel, who does not use it in sense 2) < classical Latin prīmus prime adj. + French -ine -ine suffix¹. Compare tercine n. and earlier secundine n. 3. Sense 2 appears to be due to confusion with sense 1 by the translators of quot. 1875 at sense 2; the German original of quot. 1875 at sense 2 does not contain the mistaken reference to Mirbel's use of French primine.
