Etymology: < classical Latin prīmaevus young, youthful, in post-classical Latin also primitive, primordial (4th cent.), original (6th cent.), eldest (from 12th cent. in British sources), primevum (noun) youth (a1275, c1435 in British sources) < prīmus prime adj. + aevum aevum n. With the noun compare Middle French primeve childhood (a1507 in an apparently isolated attestation). With the adjective compare Middle French primeve primal, primordial (1532 in Rabelais in an apparently isolated attestation in a highly Latinate context, in the passage translated in quot. 1653 at primeval adj. α. ), Italian primevo (a1375).
