单词 primerole
释义

primerolen.

Brit. /ˈprɪmərəʊl/, U.S. /ˈprɪməˌroʊl/
Forms: Middle English premerole, Middle English primerol, Middle English primeroll, Middle English primerolle, Middle English primrol, Middle English primrole, Middle English prymerole, Middle English prymmerole, Middle English prymrol, Middle English prymrole, Middle English 1900s– primerole, Middle English–1500s prymerolle.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French primerole.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman primerole, premerole and Old French, Middle French primerole primrose, cowslip (c1250 or earlier in Anglo-Norman), primula, (perhaps) daisy (first half of the 15th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman; French (now regional: chiefly Normandy) primerole primrose, cowslip), probably < prime first (see prime adj.) + -erole , diminutive suffix (see note below), the flower being so called because it was popularly perceived as the first flower to bloom in spring. Compare later primrose n., primula n., and see further discussion at these entries. The French suffix -erole , an extended form of -ole -ole suffix1, also occurs in other French plant names, e.g. féverole a kind of bean (14th cent. in Middle French as faverole : see faverole n.). Apparently attested earlier as a surname, although it is unclear whether this implies currency of the Middle English or Anglo-Norman word: Willelmus Primerole (1253).
Now historical.
Any of several flowers of early spring, esp. the primrose ( Primula vulgaris), the cowslip ( P. veris), and the field daisy ( Bellis perennis). Also figurative: a pretty young woman. The word frequently denotes a plant of the genus Primula, several species of which, e.g. the primrose and cowslip, were called Primula veris by medieval and Renaissance botanists; it is often unclear which of these species is meant.
