单词 primero
释义

primeron.

Brit. /prᵻˈmɛːrəʊ/, /prᵻˈmɪərəʊ/, U.S. /prᵻˈmɛroʊ/, /prᵻˈmiroʊ/
Forms:

α. 1500s priemeero, 1500s primerow, 1500s– primero, 1600s priméro.

β. 1600s primera.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish primera.
Etymology: Probably < Spanish primera gambling card game in which only four cards are dealt (1535 or earlier), use as noun of feminine of primero first (see primer adj.). Compare Italian primiera gambling card game in which only four cards are dealt (1517; also as †primera (a1552)), winning combination of four cards in this game (a1535; apparently < Spanish primera (although this is apparently first attested slightly later)), and also (apparently all ultimately < Spanish) Middle French, French †premiere denoting the game (mid 16th cent.), post-classical Latin primera denoting the game and the winning combination of cards, primaria denoting the game (both a1576 or earlier). Compare prime n.2 8, prima vista n.The game was apparently so called because the winning combination consisted of the first (i.e. highest-ranking) cards in each suit. The forty-card pack used for the game followed the Spanish suit pattern, and Spanish card-playing practice has always been influential in Italy. It is therefore likely that the game originated in Spain, and rapidly spread to Italy and other countries.
Cards. Now historical.
A gambling game, fashionable in the 16th and 17th centuries, in which each player was dealt four cards from a forty-card pack, and players bet on the combinations of the cards they were dealt. Cf. prima vista n., prime n.2 8. Also figurative.
