Etymology: < Spanish primeras (apparently not recorded in this sense in dictionaries of Spanish before 2001, but compare cinco primeras in same sense (1803 or earlier)), short for cinco primeras bazas five first tricks ( < cinco five (see cinque n.) + primeras , feminine plural of primero first (see primer adj.) + bazas, plural of baza trick (1599; of uncertain origin)). N.E.D. (1908) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (primē·ras) /priˈmɛːras/.
