Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prestant.
Etymology: < French prestant (1636) < classical Latin praestant- , praestāns (adjective) outstanding, excellent, use as adjective of present participle of praestāre to excel (see prestance n.). Compare Dutch prestant (early 19th cent. or earlier as praestant (now rare)), German Praestant (1619 or earlier; now usually Prästant). Compare also Middle French, French †prestant outstanding, excellent (1492), Italian prestante outstanding, excellent (a1405; the use as noun denoting an organ stop is apparently not paralleled in Italian until later (end of the 20th cent. or earlier)).In form praestant in quot. 1980 after the German form.
Music.
A rank of open flue pipes on the organ, of 4-foot, 8-foot, or 16-foot pitch, corresponding to the principal or open diapason (diapason n. 7) stop on English organs.
