Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French pressif ; press v.1, -ive suffix.
Etymology: Originally < French †pressif pressing, urgent (1549 in Middle French; apparently c1400 as pressis violent), impressive (1620 in the passage translated in quot. 1623 at sense 3) < presser press v.1 + -if -ive suffix. In later use also directly < press v.1 + -ive suffix. Compare earlier expressive adj., impressive adj., oppressive adj.
Now rare.
