Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pressirostres.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pressirostres ( Cuvier Leçons d'anat. compareé (1800) I. Table 2) < pressirostris , adjective < classical Latin pressus pressed (see press adj.) + -i- -i- connective + rostrum beak, bill (see rostrum n.). Compare French pressirostres (1800 in Cuvier, in the same work). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (presirǫ·stəɹ) /prɛsɪˈrɒstə/.
Ornithology. Obsolete. rare.
A bird of the former group Pressirostres, characterized by a short, relatively strong bill capable of digging in the ground for food, and including the plovers and certain other waders, along with bustards and seriemas.
