Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek προῳδός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek προῳδός short verse preceding a longer one, in Byzantine Greek also prelude, overture < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + ᾠδή ode n.
In ancient Greek poetry: an introductory ode in a Greek chorus; a stanza preceding the strophe of a lyric ode (opposed to epode n. 2); (also) a short verse preceding a longer one.
