Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish primavera.
Etymology: < American Spanish primavera (although this is apparently not recorded in this sense in dictionaries of Spanish), apparently a transferred use of primavera springtime (see primaveral adj.), the tree being so called on account of its early flowering.
More fully primavera mahogany. A tree of Mexico and Central America, Tabebuia donnell-smithii (family Bignoniaceae), with striking trumpet-shaped yellow flowers that cover the crown after the leaves are shed. Also: the light-coloured wood of this tree, used esp. for furniture and inlaying (also called white mahogany).

Etymology: Apparently < Italian primavera (in alla primavera , literally ‘in the style of springtime’ ( < alla in the + primavera springtime: see primaveral adj.), although neither of these appears to be recorded in dictionaries of Italian), the dish being so called on account of the fresh vegetables with which it is served.
Designating any of various dishes, esp. pasta dishes, served with fresh vegetables and usually a light sauce. Also: designating a sauce of this type. Frequently as postmodifier.
