Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: primate n.1, -ial suffix.
Etymology: < primate n.1 + -ial suffix. With sense 1 compare French primatial (1445 in Middle French), post-classical Latin primatialis (frequently from c1215 in British sources), Italian primaziale (1619), all in sense ‘of or relating to an ecclesiastical primate’. With the uses in quots. 1623 at sense 1, 1725 at sense 1 compare French primatiale (noun) primatial church (1607). In sense 2 after Primates n.; compare slightly later primatal adj.
1. Christian Church. Of, relating to, or having ecclesiastical primacy; of or relating to a primate. Also in extended use.The word should perhaps be interpreted as a noun in quot. 1623.
