单词 primarily
释义

primarilyadv.

Brit. /ˈprʌɪm(ə)rᵻli/, /ˈprʌɪm(ə)rl̩i/, /prʌɪˈmɛrᵻli/, U.S. /praɪˈmɛrəli/, /prəˈmɛrəli/
Forms: 1500s–1600s primarilie, 1600s– primarily.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: primary adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: < primary adj. + -ly suffix2. Webster's New Internat. Dict. Eng. Lang. (1934) gives the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable, apparently not previously mentioned in dictionaries, as an alternative to that with initial stress, and explains it as the raising of secondary stress to primary under conditions of emphasis; Webster's third edition (1961) gives both without remark, also indicating the possible reduction of the vowel of the first syllable to schwa. D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict. gives the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable for the first time in the 14th ed. (1977).
