Etymology: < classical Latin praeceptiōn-, praeceptiō preconception, instruction, precept, right of receiving a legacy in advance < praecept- , past participial stem of praecipere (see precept n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French préception command, precept (1452 in Middle French). Compare earlier perception n., conception n. 5. Compare also earlier precept n., precept v.
