Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praecentor.
Etymology: < classical Latin praecentor person who leads singing in a choir (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < praecent- , past participial stem of praecinere to sing or play before (a person, etc.), to foretell ( < prae- pre- prefix + canere to sing: see chant v.) + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French †préchantre (1270 in Old French as precentre), Middle French, French †précenteur (1374 as prechanteur).
A person who leads or directs the singing of a choir or congregation; spec. a cathedral cleric responsible for choral services; (in a church without a choir or instrumental accompaniment) a person appointed to lead congregational singing. Also (in a synagogue): a person appointed to lead the prayers of the congregation. Cf. cantor n.1
