Etymology: < Middle French precellent (c1175 in Old French; French précellent ) and its etymon classical Latin praecellent-, praecellēns excellent, pre-eminent, use as adjective of present participle of praecellere precel v. Compare Italian precellente (14th cent.).In form precellend probably by association with Older Scots present participles in -and -and suffix1.
