Etymology: < Middle French precellence (1420; French †précellence ) and its etymon post-classical Latin praecellentia excellence (Vetus Latina), pre-eminence (from 13th cent. in British sources; earlier (from c1080) as a form of address) < classical Latin praecellent- , praecellēns precellent adj. + -ia -y suffix3; compare -ence suffix. Compare earlier precellent adj. Compare also earlier excellence n. and slightly later pre-excellence n.
Now rare.
