Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin precātīvus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin precātīvus of the nature of a prayer, expressing a wish (from 3rd cent. in legal texts, 6th cent. in a grammatical text), sought by prayer (4th cent.) < classical Latin precāt- , past participial stem of precārī to entreat, pray (see precation n.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare earlier deprecative adj.
Chiefly Grammar.
Expressing entreaty or desire; supplicatory; (spec. in Grammar, of a word, particle, mood, etc.) expressing a request or wish. Also as n.: a precative mood or expression.precative disposition n. Law Obsolete rare = precatory trust n. at precatory adj. 2.
