Etymology: < prefix n. + -oid suffix, after Italian prefissoido (B. Migliorini 1935, in Archivio glottologico italiano 27 14).

A combining form, esp. one with no prior currency as an independent word.

1979 Dictionaries 1 16 I have suggested that we reserve the term ‘combining form’ for phenomena of the type 2 because there is an allomorphic relationship which accounts for the term ‘combining’ form. For phenomena of the type 1 where there is no such relationship I have suggested the term affixoids which comprise prefixoids and suffixoids.
1996 S. Greenbaum Oxf. Eng. Gram. Notes 596 Prefixoids are sound sequences that resemble genuine prefixes without qualifying for the status of prefix, since their etymology is not known to the vast majority of speakers.
