Etymology: < classical Latin praefīnīre to determine or limit beforehand, to prescribe (Cicero) < prae- pre- prefix + fīnīre finish v. Compare Middle French prefinir (1392), Spanish prefinir (1414), Italian prefinire (a1472), all in sense ‘to fix in advance’. Compare earlier define v., predefine v., and prefinite adj.
