Etymology: < post-classical Latin praeambulat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of praeambulare preamble v.1In quot. 1598, both the Quarto and the Folio read preambulat , but this is commonly emended to preambulate by modern editors. Later examples of the word, such as the following, are probably errors for perambulate v.:1703 F. Bugg News from Pensilvania When he Preambulates the City, one bare headed, with a long White Wan over his Shoulder, in Imitation of the Lord Marshal of England, Marches gradually before him and his Train.1826 Times 11 Nov. 3/5 He and several other constables supped with sheriff Jones, previous to preambulating the city, which is a common practice on Saturday night.1955 Progress (Clearfield, Pa.) 20 Apr. 4/3 Please invite all mothers to dress up in their finest Easter togs and bring the children to preambulate down the avenue.
