Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < bench n. + -ed suffix2, and partly (in sense 2) < bench v.1 + -ed suffix1.With sense 1b compare banked adj.1 In β. forms apparently after past participle forms of other verbs in y- prefix (bench v.1 is not itself attested in Middle English).
