Etymology: < post-classical Latin presbyteratus office of presbyter or priest, priesthood (5th cent.) < presbyter presbyter n. + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix1. Compare Spanish presbiterato (first half of the 15th cent. or earlier), Portuguese presbiterato (1642 as †presbyterato ), Italian presbiterato (14th cent.; earlier in sense ‘office of cardinal’ (a1292)), all in sense ‘office of priest’. Compare earlier presbytery n., and (with sense 2) earlier presbytership n.
