单词 presbyta
释义

presbytan.

Inflections: Plural presbytae.
Forms: 1600s–1700s presbyta, 1700s presbita.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin presbyta.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin presbyta far-sighted person (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1693, in the title of a medical dissertation) < ancient Greek πρεσβύτης old man (compare pseudo-Aristotle Problems 959b38: see note below) < πρέσβυς old man (see presbyter n.) + -της , suffix forming nouns, perhaps after πολίτης citizen (see politic adj.). Compare French presbyte presbyte n., Italian presbite (c1765; earlier as †presbita (1672)).The modern use is not that in pseudo-Aristotle Problems, which only raises the question why an old man (πρεσβύτης) is long-sighted.
Obsolete.
= presbyope n.
